All’uscita dell'album di debutto Café Bleu nel 1984, Weller e il suo braccio destro Mick Talbot proposero un mix cosmopolita di jazz, soul e pop, che suonava naturale, audace e sofisticato. Café Bleu fu più di un debutto: fu una dichiarazione d'intenti che ridefinì un tipo di sound del pop britannico del nuovo decennio.
